Most people spend most of their time in the work place. Good indoor air quality safeguards the health of the building occupants and contributes to their comform and well-being.

To improve the indoor air quality (IAQ) and promote public awareness of the importance of IAQ, we have implemented an IAQ Management Programme. One of the core tasks of the Programme is to launch a voluntary IAQ Certification Scheme for Offices and Public Places. A 2-level IAQ objectives (Excellent Class and Good Class) is used as the benchmark to assess IAQ of buildings.

To achieve acceptable indoor air quality, IAQ needs to be considered at every stage of a building’s life –from design and construction to operation and maintenance. Various strategies are used to promote good air quality and prevent indoor air pollution problem.

The monitored pollutants in the Hong Kong IAQ Certification Scheme include Relative Humidity, Room Temperature, Air Movement, Carbon Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Respirable Suspended Particulates, Nitrogen Dioxide, Ozone, Formaldehyde, Total Volatile Organic Compounds, Radon and Airborne Bacteria. The parameters above can be utilized to forecast the air quality precisely. Maintenance needs to be done properly and regularly by monitoring the air conditioning and ventilation system.
